Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu held a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Japanese Defence Minister Tomomi Inada in Tokyo, Monday, as both countries work to strengthen regional security and to end a decades-long territorial dispute over four islands located between Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula and Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. In Russia the islands in dispute are known as the Southern Kuril Islands, with Japan referring to them as the Northern Territories. Both Russia and Japan claim ownership of the islands, with the decades-long disagreement leaving a post-WWII peace deal still unsigned. Russia last held the 'two-plus-two' format talks with Japan to resolve the territorial dispute issue in November 2013, but the talks were suspended after Japan joined US-led sanctions against Russia following the Ukraine crisis.
